The Final Fantasy 7 Remake was apparently the start of a trilogy, as hinted at by the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth announcement.
The Final Fantasy 7 remake was a masterful update of the original game, but it was missing some bits of the iconic story. This is because Square Enix has been waiting for two more titles.
Part two of the remake of the industry-changing RPG was shown during the Square Enix 25th Anniversary Livestream. The developers indicated during the stream that it will be available in winter 2023.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is slated for release in Winter 2023
The anniversary stream revealed that Final Fantasy 7 Remake made its way to Steam and became instantly compatible with the Steam Deck. This comes two years after the remake first launched on April 10, 2020.
Shortly thereafter came the reveal that the entire Final Fantasy 7 remake would be in trilogy format. Only the first few sections of the game were explored in the remake, and FF7 Rebirth will build on that.
Usually a title is revealed, and then a release date is given much later. While no specific release date has been given, Square Enix surprised fans with a release window.
The second edition of the reinterpretation of one of the most popular game titles will be released in winter 2023. That gives a few months to work with it, perhaps with a holiday release of 2023 or just after the new year if they need more time.
What to expect from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
After the game’s reveal, Creative Director Tetsuya Nomura had this to say:
“Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is designed so that people can enjoy this game whether they know the original game or not. In fact, new players might even enjoy starting their Final Fantasy 7 journey with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Cloud and his friends embark on a new journey in this game, and I believe the scenes they see after leaving Midgar will offer players a fresh new experience.”
That kind of feeling gives a feeling that the trilogy will be a retelling of the FF7 story rather than a direct remake. The conversation in the trailer about changing the future hints at a multiversal branch.
The graphics are sure to be incredible, leaving fans wondering what some scenes from the original game might look like. They also wonder if there will be a change in the narrative hinted at by Tetsuya Nomura’s words.
